Cultural Capital is one store of knowledge and proficiency with artistic and cultural styles that are valued by society and confer prestige and honor upon those associated with them.
Consumerism is a social and economic order that encourages the purchase of goods and services in every greater amounts. An example would be shopping. The saying "spend til' the end" is true in some cases. People will spend til they have no more. Why? because we want what we cant have.
Taste: ones preference for particular style of fashion, music, cinema, or other kinds of culture. Example would be these Dock Martin's vs Heels.
Emotional Energy is a strong benefit of group membership (society, a cultural group or structural group) is the emotional energy one receives from taking part in social gatherings. Durkheim called this "collective effervescence". Like the Atmosphere concert, when it gets quiet and then all of a sudden everyone sings the same song, all you hear are hundreds, thousands of people enjoying something without a care in the world. Or even at a Clippers game when Blake Griffin is about to dunk the ball... That feeling when thousands of people get silent and wait, watching to see if he'll make the game point. That feeling of connection with a complete stranger...
Popular Culture is cultureal activities or commercial products reflecting or aiming to a general mass of people, Examples would be music, media, food etc.
Exogamy is marriage outside a social group. This picture is a Mexican woman married to an Arabic man. They both come from very different social, economic, and racial background.
Instrumental Task refers to the physical tasks necessary to maintain family life. This picture shows that washing dishes is helping the household and maintaining a clean house as well as environment for the children.
Monogamy is being married to one person at a time.

Nuclear Family is a family that consist of a father, mother and their biological children.
Family is defined as a social group whose members are bound by legal, biological, or emotional ties, or a combination of all three.
Gender Role Socialization is the lifelong process of learning to be masculine or feminine. Families are the primary source of socialization and greatly impact gender role socialization. Sexual Orientation is the inclination to be heterosexual (attracted to the opposite sex), homosexual (attracted to the same sex), or bisexual (attracted to either sex). Today its more common for there to be any of the sexual orientation shown in public rather than hiding it.
Instrumental Role: Men more suited for the role of the person who provides the family's material support and is often an authority figure. These men working as police officers shows how masculine they are. Expressive Role: women more suited for the person who provides the family's emotional support and nurturing.This woman is being a mother to her child.
Sex refers to an individuals membership in one or two biologically distinct categories, male or female. Sex refers to the biological characteristics.

Gender refers to the physical, behavioral, and personality traits that a group considers normal for its male and female members. Gender is a socially constructed term and no one has it when they enter the world. they gain it through living in societies and interacting with people.
Pluralism (also known as multiculturalism) is a pattern of inter- group relations that encourage racial and ethnic variation within a society. This picture show different people who have encountered different types of  racial and ethnic groups.

Minority Groups is made up of members of a social group that is systematically denied the same access to power and resources available to dominant groups of a society. This picture shows Women and Gay's


Symbolic Ethnicity is an ethnic identity that is only relevent on specific occasions and does not significantly impact everyday live. Cinco De Mayo is a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War.
Ethnicity is a socially defined category based on common language, religion, nationality, history, or another cultural factor.




Race is a socially defied category based on real or percieved biological differences betweeen groups of people. Race is not biological people think skin color is a race, we place a name on a person by the basis on how they appear.

American Dream is the idea that anyone can achieve material success if they work hard enough. Telling us that everyone has the same opportunity to get ahead.

Social Class aslo refered as Socialeconomic Staus (SES), refers to a system of stratification based on access to wealth, property, power, education and prestige.

Social Stratification is the division of society into groups arranged in a social hierarchy based on access to wealth, power, and prestige. An example would be the grocery store, or the stores located around the area where we live. In the Low class there are stores such as the 'Discount store, Bargain Store, 99 cent store'. Yet in the High class they have stores such as ' Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Organic Stores'.
Stigma: any physical or social attribute that devalues a person or groups identity, and which may exclude those who are edeviant from normal social interctions. there are 3 main types of stigma, physical, moral, tribal.

 Structural Strain Theory argues that the tension or strain between socially approved goals and an individuals ability to meet those goals through socially approved means will lead to deviance as individuals reject either the goals (achieving success), the means ( hard work, education), or both.


Different Association Theory: states that we learn to be deviant through our associations with deviant peers. This picture shows the young man drinking, while his friends are encouraging it.


Deviance is a behavior, trait, belief, or other characteristic that violates a norm and causes a negative reaction. Eating sloppy in public shows deviance because its not likely for someone to be eating sloppy in public. As infants we are told to have manners and shown the appropriate way of doing things.

Aggregate is a collection of people who share a physical location but do not have lasting social relationship.These people are all headed in the same direction, but don't have anything in common other than that.Category is a group of people who share a common attribute but don't think of themselves as having anything in common.
